I’ve been sailing for as long as I can remember.
The Foundation: Lessons from my Grandma June
Some of my earliest memories are on the water with my grandparents. When I was about 10 years old, I watched my Grandma June, change sails in the middle of the ocean by herself. That moment stuck. It taught me confidence, self-reliance, and respect for the sea long before I had words for any of it.
As an adult, I formalized what I already loved, earning my ASA 101, 103, and 104 certifications. Catalina Island became my happy place. It’s where I sailed often, learned constantly, and found my rhythm on the water.
Living Aboard: Retrofitting a Dream
For five years, I lived aboard in Mission Bay, San Diego, on a boat named June, in honor of my grandmother. I retrofitted her from the inside out. Every system. Every win. Every mistake. Living aboard taught me how boats really work and how to trust myself when things break, because they always do.
Somewhere along the way, I learned how to fish. It sounds small, but it changed everything. Food, patience, and connection to the environment became part of daily life.
My Current Voyage: On Board DOING IT
When I felt ready, I went bigger.
I moved onto a larger boat, playfully named DOING IT. The name says it all. I stopped dreaming and started doing it. Most of the time, it’s just me handling the boat, and I’m proud to say I know every line, system, and maneuver. Even when others are on board, I’m the one making it all work. Sailing is tough. The ocean doesn’t care. That’s part of the appeal.
Beyond the Horizon
I also work in tech, which gives me the freedom to work from anywhere in the world. That flexibility makes this life possible and proves that adventure and career don’t have to be separate paths.
