Catalina Island Sailing: My Anchorages, Routes, and Lessons

Catalina Island is where everything clicked for me. It’s close, familiar, and still feels like an escape every single time. Roughly 22 miles off the Southern California coast, Catalina delivers clear water, steady wind, and just enough challenge to remind you that you’re really sailing.

The Run from Long Beach

Most Catalina trips start from Long Beach or San Pedro. The route is straightforward but never boring.

You usually motor out, raise sails once clear of traffic lanes, and then settle in. The shipping lanes keep you alert, the wind builds as you head south, and somewhere mid-channel the mainland disappears behind you. That’s the moment Catalina earns its magic.

Two Harbors: Quiet, Simple, Perfect

Two Harbors is the laid-back side of Catalina. It’s where sailors go to slow down.

It’s calm, clean, and cruiser-friendly. You’ll find:
• Moorings and anchoring areas
• Clear water for swimming
• Dinghy docks, hiking trails, and a small village vibe

This is a coffee-on-deck, paddleboard-before-lunch kind of place. Nights are quiet. Sunsets are unreal. It’s easy to lose track of time here.

Avalon: Energy, Lights, and Life

Avalon is Catalina’s social hub. It’s louder, brighter, and packed with energy.

Avalon Harbor: 33.342, -118.327

Avalon offers:

• Mooring balls with a view
• Restaurants, bars, and shops
• A constant hum of boats and people

It’s fun, busy, and a total contrast to Two Harbors. Avalon nights glow. Dinghies buzz around. Music drifts across the water. It’s not peaceful, but it’s alive.
